History[]
The Ballista was a larger version of the gastraphetes used as a siege weapon. It was used inside siege towers or on the edge of a battlefield usually using locally gathered wood with the nonlumber parts. Under the use of Alexander the Great it began to gain the reputation of a siege weapon and the first large scale field artillery. The design was so effective a smaller more portable version, the Scorpion, was created. As ammunition they used large bolts as anit-personel and spherical stone balls to destroy lighter structures.
