“ The unrepentant Volsci continue to harass our Hernici allies. Rather than entangling Rome in this tribal dispute, the Senate has decreed that we shall dispatch a cohort of soldiers to assist the Hernici keep the peace. The Senate continues to seek a middle path, which Caesar warns will hit neither target. Caesar suspects that overly cautious Pompey is meddling in the Senate's affairs. That old man gets in everybody's way. I will contact Pompey myself while you attend to this errand. Though I suppose it wouldn't kill us to make allies of the Hernici while still reminding them of the discipline and valor of our Legionaries. See what you can do. ”
“ The Hernici send word that our Legionaries have served with honor. While it is favorable for Rome's influence to expand, the Volsci still fester. This is what happens when soft men mistake cowardice for diplomacy.
I spoke to Pompey, and he boasted of the influence he wields over the Senate and as much as admitted to Caesar that he has meddled in the Senate's affairs. Pompey cautions the Senate against engaging with the Volsci not because he believes they are superior to the Roman army, but because Pompey wishes to deny Caesar additional glory. Pompey's arrogance is a danger to Rome.
Pompey is an old man who would rather rest on his laurels than bring glory to the Romans. And that is where he and Caesar part ways. ”
