“ Now that Rome has established its Republic and made a name for itself among its neighbors, we face an opportunity to expand our influence. The Hernici are a nearby Italian people who have always been allies with Rome. Recently, the underhanded Volsci have been intimidating Hernici Villagers. Had Caesar been consulted, Rome would have eliminated those Volsci scoundrels years ago. But Rome is still young and not ready for Caesar. Instead, the Senate seeks to avoid war and has dispatched a group of emissaries to assist our allies and keep the peace.
This is precisely the type of middling compromise Caesar would expect to see from Pompey or Crassus. Perhaps they have the Senate's ear. Great empires are not maintained by timidity. But the Senate wills it, so Caesar commands you to make it so. ”
